A 14-year-old aspiring police officer donned a uniform, walked into a Chicago police station and managed to get an assignment — patroling in a squad car for five hours before he was detected, police said Sunday.

The boy did not have a gun, never issued any tickets and didn't drive the squad car, Deputy Superintendent Daniel Dugan said.

Assistant Superintendent James Jackson said the ruse was discovered only after the boy's patrol with an actual officer ended Saturday. Officers noticed his uniform lacked a star that is part of the regulation uniform.

Police said they were investigating how the deception went undetected for so long in what they described as a serious security breach. Police said disciplinary steps are possible pending the outcome of the investigation.

Houston lawyer Richard T. Howell Jr., whose firm was scammed out of $182,500 by a client who contacted and hired him through e-mail, says he is talking publicly about the situation so he can prevent other Texas lawyers from making the same mistakes.

"I'm a capital 'D' Dumbass," says Howell, who has practiced law for 23 years and is a partner in Buckley, White, Castaneda & Howell.

In October 2008, Howell became the victim of a sophisticated, international version of a classic check-fraud scam, say two Texas consumer law attorneys....

"What has happened to him is a typical form of check fraud," says Richard Tomlinson, of the Law Office of Richard Tomlinson in Houston.

Because he is responsible, Howell says, he did not ask his partners to help him cover the loss, which stemmed from collections work Howell did for a client who said he was a businessman in Japan. To reimburse his firm, Howell says, he had to borrow money on a home equity loan.

She quietly pleaded guilty to drunken driving and was sentenced on the day President Obama was inaugurated.

But it may be another two years before Cook County Judge Sheila McGinnis is disciplined by the authorities who oversee Illinois judges - if they discipline her, according to the executive director of the Illinois Judicial Inquiry Board.

McGinnis on Tuesday dodged a potential one-year jail term when she admitted drunkenly crashing her Chevrolet sport utility vehicle into the back of a family-of-four's minivan May 9 in Tinley Park....

Judge Edward Burmila fined McGinnis $1,000, ordered her to complete an 18-month probation stint, to attend counseling and to attend a victim impact panel during a brief hearing at the Markham courthouse.

The sentence was normal for a first-time offender, Burmila said.

But McGinnis, a cousin of Chicago Mayor Richard Daley, continues to draw a $150,000 judge's salary from the county. She was transferred from a criminal courtroom to administrative duties at the Daley Center after her arrest last summer....

Mr Packer, 41, who inherited a fortune from his father, the media tycoon Kerry Packer, has seen the value of his assets halve in the past year, from $6bn to less than $3bn, according to the Sydney Sunday Telegraph.

He launched his Mangusta 165 yacht, the Z Ellerston, in July, after a two-year wait for delivery. The world's largest model of open yacht, at 165ft, it is sold with a complimentary Aston Martin and features nine bedrooms. Mr Packer has also deferred delivery of a Boeing Business Jet to 2010 to release some capital, the paper said. Mr Packer, who has divested himself of his father's media interests and is focusing on creating a global casino empire, was listed as Australia's third richest man last year.

Since then, the size of his fortune has shrunk further, which may explain why a $3.7m swimming pool and pavilion in the grounds of his sprawling property, Ellerston, in the Hunter Valley, north of Sydney, remains incomplete.

He is said to be overweight and suffering depression as a result of his financial woes, and has not been seen in public for some time. In recent weeks, he has sold his stake in the family's pastoral company, which operates 17 cattle stations in northern Australia, for about $425m.

However, he still owns one of Australia's leading golf courses, an 18-hole course designed by Greg Norman, situated at Ellerston and maintained in championship condition year-round.

A 38-year-old Pablo man was arrested for his eighth drunken-driving offense early Wednesday after a sheriff's deputy spotted him driving with his headlights off.

Steven Lee Rodriguez was allegedly driving his truck slowly through a parking lot on West Broadway when he was stopped by an officer. According to charging documents, Rodriguez smelled of alcohol and appeared intoxicated. His eyes were red, glassy and bloodshot, and his speech was slow.

Rodriguez admitted he had been drinking, and a background check of his name revealed seven prior DUI convictions.

Rodriguez also had a felony warrant out of Lake County for $20,000. That warrant, issued after his seventh DUI, is based on a petition to revoke the sentence that Rodriguez received after his sixth DUI.

Rodriguez refused to perform field sobriety tests on the roadside, records state, and was transported to the jail. After failing a walk-and-turn maneuver, Rodriguez stated “I'm drunk,” according to records.

Snowmobiler blamed for death of 57 ducks -

A single snowmobiler in Fond du Lac, Wis., likely killed 57 mallard ducks found on a partially iced-over river, investigators say.

Investigators said initial signs indicated one snowmobiler crossed the frozen portion of Fond du Lac River and skipped across the area of open water, hitting and killing ducks wading in the open space, the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel said Wednesday.

Department of Natural Resources warden supervisor George Protogere said signs at the scene of the crime indicated the unidentified snowmobiler made more than one pass at the wading ducks Tuesday.

The incident came mere days after a group of snowmobilers in Waupaca County herded several deer together before striking the animals with their vehicles.

That incident left four deer dead and forced the euthanization of a fifth deer, the Journal Sentinel said.
